Aurora & the WEEE Directive

Aurora & the WEEE Directive

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force on the 1st July in the UK.
These regulations place obligations onto users and producers of Electrical & Electronic Equipment (EEE) to
handle & process their waste responsibly, in an environmentally friendly way. These regulations no longer
allow users or producers to dispose of WEEE in landfill sites, but to encourage the treatment, reuse, recover,
recycling and sound environmental disposal of EEE.
This legislation requires for business to comply and to register with a registered Compliance Scheme by 15th
March 2007. Aurora Ltd. elected to join a scheme operated by Electrolink, a division of Wastepack .
Our registration number is WEE/BG0130YX.
Legislation requires all relevant WEEE products to be labelled with the crossed out Wheelie Bin Symbol.
Therefore, all Aurora products bearing this symbol must not be disposed of with other domestic or
commercial waste.
The legislation also differentiates between B2C (Business to Consumer) and B2B (Business to Business)
producers. Those businesses who fall under B2C are required to join or operate a “take-back scheme” whilst
those under B2B, may opt for the “alternative arrangement” under 3289, Regulation 9(2). As Aurora Ltd. only
supplies EEE to other businesses, the B2B option of the Directive applies.
Aurora believes the “not-for-profit” option is the best for our customers and provides best value and service.
Therefore, Aurora do not intend charging our customers a “WEEE Levy” at the time of purchase. We maintain
that it would be unfair to charge our customers in advance for the disposal of products for many years hence,
with the added risk of future legislation changes which could affect cost & methods of disposal.
By using this “alternative arrangement” under 3289, Regulation 9(2), allows two choices for our customers for
when EEE eventually becomes waste. These are:-
1. We encourage customers to separate any WEEE related products from other waste types and recycle it
responsibly at your nearest Designated Collection Facility or via their chosen waste contractor or by
contacting our scheme’s Electrolink Takeback Service .
2. The customer can request Aurora Ltd to arrange the collection of unwanted products. Aurora will then
arrange with Electrolink to take back the waste. However, as we have not charged any WEEE Levy at the time
of purchase, we reserve the right, at that time, to make a charge for this collection.
Lamps other than Aurora or Halolite brands are not the responsibility of Aurora Ltd., but are the responsibility
of the lamp manufacturer, as marked on the lamp.
